Singapore
lies in an area that can support a rich and diverse marine
environment, but unfortunately the main harbour area suffers
heavily from the numerous ships that call on the island
city. Beyond that, however, some very interesting dive areas
are located around the Singapore coast. Keen local divers
and dive clubs venture forth on a regular basis to dive
the local coastline, offshore reefs and islands. The fact
that Singapore is a popular stop for passengers in transit
to other Southeast Asian countries, as well as a final destination
for many business visitors makes it a logical place to try
the local diving. The nearby town of Mersing on the Malaysian
Peninsular offers excellent diving away from the local harbour.
The marine life in Singapore benefits from being near the
center of the world's most diverse marine environment located
in the seas and coastlines of Indonesia and Malaysia. An
example of this was the discovery of new species of Mandarin
fish in the main harbour of Singapore. No doubt further
dive exploration in some of the less popular areas will
find additional marine wonders that have eluded discovery
until now.
